Supporting EPSRC Impact Acceleration Accounts Generating Impact with Liverpool's Materials Innovation Factory

We spent last week in Liverpool to deliver our Generating Impact: IAA to Innovation course for the postdoctoral researchers from University of Liverpool. Over a three-day business boot camp, we formed team to assess the commercial potential of four Impact Acceleration Account projects from the Materials Innovation Factory. We worked with researchers through the process of translating a discovery from the lab into a viable commercial proposition and explored the frequent pitfalls of founding a start-up and how to overcome these challenges.

The course took place in DoES Liverpool, a coworking space in Liverpool with an active maker community. DoES Liverpool provided the perfect backdrop for innovative thinking and the teams had the opportunity for a tour of the space from Adrian McEwen, one of the cofounders of DoES.

Projects ranged from novel 3D printing techniques to an affordable, portable compound analyser.  We love seeing scientists lead the way in taking technology out of the lab and into the marketplace. We’re excited to see the next steps for the emerging spin outs from the IAA projects and the best of luck to the founding teams driving the projects forward!
