Further details:

Essential commercial skills for scientists

Scientists and engineers have the technical expertise to solve a wide range of commercial problems. However, for individual researchers, understanding how to use this expertise to consult for businesses can often be mystifying.

We strongly believe that scientists and engineers benefit personally and professionally if they have the skill-sets and knowledge to bridge the gap between academia and business, and the language to communicate with both communities. Our 2 day PhD to Consulting program offers academics the opportunity to experience scientific consulting hands-on in an unintimidating environment.

Benefits:

  • Increase your commercial awareness, knowledge of business terminology and understanding of the consulting process

  • Deliver a real 1.5 day consulting contract for an early stage science company.

  • Networking opportunities with company founders and scientists

  • Become eligible to be considered for future paid consulting contracts delivered with Bristol Consulting Partnership.

Who is it for:

The course is open to PhD researchers, post-docs and other academics in science, engineering or related fields. No prior business or consulting background is required to take part. It is suitable for academics looking to explore the options available to them outside of research, or to understand how to supplement their income by conducting contract work alongside their research.

Our focus is on providing consultancy for early- to mid-stage scientific companies. However, this course would also suit individuals intending to apply to major consulting firms, who want to increase their foundation knowledge before or during the application process.

Course content and schedule:

This 2 day course provides a hands-on introduction to the scientific consulting process. You will learn through experience by delivering a real 1.5 day consulting contract for an early- or mid-stage scientific company, guided by facilitators from start to finish. As our courses involve delivering a project for a real company, each program is unique. We will cover areas including market research, technology commercialisation, IP, financial awareness, communication and client management. An example schedule is provided below.

Day 1: 9.15am – 7pm - breakfast & lunch provided
A morning of taught material provides an introduction to consulting and equips you with key terminology and concepts. After lunch, you meet the client and begin to address their brief. Training can extend into the evening with dinner or drinks at Unit DX or a restaurant in Bristol.

Day 2: 9.00am – 5pm - breakfast & lunch provided
Pick up from the previous day and continue to learn how to develop solutions for the client. In the afternoon, bring your work together by producing a report and presentation of your findings. Deliver these to the client before the course closes at 5pm.

Included:

  • All training materials and facilitation

  • Breakfasts, lunches and refreshments

  • Opportunities to meet company founders and scientists

  • Arranged sessions with external professionals (where relevant)

Testimonials

Hear from some of our former participants:

“Cannot fault the program as it opened my eyes to a whole other industry and how it works. The consultancy environment and approach is very very different from the lab. This course was the perfect balance of scope, speed and real-world consultancy. The training and coaching provided by the people running the course meant that you always felt on top of things.” - PhD candidate, 4th year

“I think the program is a fantastic introduction to the world of start-ups and consulting as alternative career paths to academia. For me personally the course gave the opportunity to successfully step out of my usual comfort zone, helping me to identify some of my key strengths and weaknesses. The excellent feedback provided at the end of the course also helped me identify some useful skills that I could develop further going forward. —— I enjoyed working under time pressure in a small team during the program and thought the balance between hands-on and hands-off learning was spot on. It felt great to deliver something at the end of such a short amount of time which was of genuine use to the client. I also really enjoyed that there was an infectious sense of enthusiasm for the start-up community at UnitDX which gave a real sense of how exciting it must be to work there. The free coffee was also exceptional.” - Post-doctoral researcher

“Being able to see the real challenges that start-ups face, and helping to try and solve them, was really really interesting - it's not something I really know anything about, so I found it fascinating to see that first hand.” - PhD candidate, 2nd year
